Graz, Austria has a population of approximately 240,000 people, is the second largest city in Austria, and is the capital of Styria (federal state). Graz is a transportation and cultural center. Industry includes iron and steel, precision and optical instruments. Graz is built around a mountain peak, so it is mainly forest. Graz is surrounded by hills on three sides. Because of the history of World War II, the Graz city council presented the Jewish community with a new synagogue in 2000 as a gesture of goodwill. There are dozens of events and festivals throughout the year. Because of a wonderful mass transit system, it is possible to get around without a car. There is a tram network and buses. There are six universities and over 40,000 students in Graz. In 2003, Graz was named Cultural Capital of Europe. Old Town has been included as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites. Graz is located on the Mur River.
