Salzburg, Austria has a population of approximately 520,000 people, and is the capital of western Austria (federal state). Salzburg is most famous for being the city where Mozart was born. It also has interesting architecture and history. Salzburg is on the Salzach River, at the Alps. The Sound of Music was filmed in Salzburg in 1965. Even though the movie was written about a Salzburg nun, the movie is not well known among Austrians. Annual Salzburg events include the Salzburg Festival and Salzburg Easter Festival. Salzburg was a candidate for the 2006 and 2010 Olympic Games. It is currently an applicant for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Tourist attractions include skiing, cathedrals, and the Mirabell Garden. Salzburg is accessible by railroad. The city is also where travelers from Italy change trains to travel to the Alps. There is an airport, but it is mostly for chartered flights.
