Oostende, Belgium has a population of approximately 68,600 people, the largest on the coast. The major source of income was fishing. The official languages are French, English and German. Local attractions include a casino, and Ft. Napoleon. The Mercator Ship floating museum is located in the harbor, and there are other memorials nearby. In 1912, the Royal Society was formed with the slogan Art and Charity, to provide help for widowed and orphaned fishermen who disappeared at sea, as well as very poor families. They hold various fund raising activates, most notably called the Bal Rat Mort, the annual dance.
