Salvador is a city on the northeast coast, and the capital of the Brazilian State of Bahia. Previously known as Bahia, Salvador appears under that name on many maps and books written before the 20th century, including Robinson Crusoe written in 1719. Salvador is located on a roughly triangular, small peninsula that separates Todos os Santos Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. The bay, which gets its name from having been discovered on All Saint's Day, forms a wonderful natural harbor, and Salvador is a major export port. A rich agricultural and industrial region, the local terrain is diverse, ranging from flat to rolling hills and low mountains. The city's famous cathedral and most administrative buildings stand on the higher ground. The coastline is equally diverse, featuring sandy beaches, sea cliffs, mangrove swamps, and a number of islands, the largest of which (Itaparica) is a famous resort area. Salvador has a tropical climate, with warm to hot temperatures and high relative humidity all year long. March is the warmest month, July is the coolest. Salvador is a culturally rich city, and offers museums, galleries, cathedrals, beaches, dances, a strong Afro-Salvador population, and more.
