The Republic of Bulgaria is a country in southeast Europe that has a population of approximately 7,800,000 people; the capital is Sofia. Bulgaria joined NATO on March 29, 2004 and signed the Treaty of Accession in 2005. The country is set to join the European Union in 2007. Bulgaria borders the Black Sea, Greece, Turkey, Serbia and Montenegro, the Republic of Macedonia, and Romania. Bulgaria has consisted of 28 provinces since 1999; before that, the country had been divided into nine provinces. Bulgaria is known to have cold, damp winters and dry, hot summers. The majority of Bulgaria's population is ethnic Bulgarian (89 percent). Bulgaria has over 10 major national parks and reservation areas.
