Split, Croatia is largest and most important city in Dalmatia, and the administrative center of Split-Dalmatia county. Split is on a small peninsula on the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea with a population of approximately 189,000 people. Split is sometimes thought to be Dalmatia's capital, but Dalmatia is not a governmental body. Split is an important with transportation links including railroad, highways, rivers, and an airport. Split is known as one of the centers of Croatian culture. There are two archaeological museums--one dedicated to antiques, another dedicated to the early Medieval period. The most recognizable culture is popular music. Split had one of the first Croatian hip-hop groups, known as TBF (The Beat Fleet). During the summer, the Split Music Festival is held, followed by the Split Summer Theater Festival.
