Zagreb, is the capital city, with a population of approximately 974,000 people. Zagreb is the largest city in Croatia and the one whose metropolitan area exceeds 1,000,000 people. The metropolitan area includes Samobor, Velika Gorica, and Zapresic. Like most other towns, the majority of citizens are Croats with over 90 percent as of 2001. In 2005, the average unemployment rate in Zagreb was around half of the national average, at 8 percent. Zagreb airport handles over 1,500,000 passengers each year. The wider Zagreb area has been constantly inhabited since the prehistoric period, as witnessed by archaeological findings from within caves and the excavation of remains of a destroyed Roman town. Zagreb is an important tourist designation; it welcomes 500,000 visitors a year.
