Egypt is a Middle East republic in North Africa with a population of approximately 78,887,007 people. While the country is geographically situated in Africa, the Sinai Peninsula, east of the Suez Canal, is a land bridge to Asia. Egypt borders Libya, Sudan, Israel, and the Gaza Strip. Egypt is the 15th most populated country in the world. The majority live near the banks of the Nile River, which has the only arable agricultural land. Large areas of land are part of the Sahara Desert. About half of the Egyptian people are urban, living in the densely populated centers of greater Cairo, the largest city in Africa, and Alexandria. Egypt is famous for its ancient civilization and some of the world's most ancient and important monuments, including the Pyramids, the Karnak Temple, the Valley of the Kings, and the Great Sphinx.
