Sharm el-Sheikh is a city on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula in Janub Sina', Egypt. It is located on the coastal strip between the Red Sea and Mount Sinai and has a population of approximately 12,000 people. Sharm el-Sheikh is the administrative hub of Egypt's Southern Sinai Province, which includes smaller coastal town and the mountains of St. Catherine's Monastery and Mount Sinai. Sharm el-Sheikh is known as The City of Peace because of the large number of International Peace Conferences held there. The main industry of Sharm el-Sheikh is foreign and domestic tourism, due to its dramatic landscape, year-round dry and temperate climate and long stretches of natural beaches. The waters are clear and calm most of the year and have become popular for various water sports, including scuba diving and snorkeling. Major luxury hotels can be found in Sharm el-Sheikh. Ras Mohammed, at the south tip of the peninsula, has been designated a national park, to protect the wildlife and natural landscape of the area
