Birmingham, England is a city and metropolitan borough in the West Midlands. Referred to as Second City, it is the largest of England's core cities. The city of Birmingham has a population of approximately 992,400 people. Residents of Birmingham are called Brummies, and there is a distinctive Brummie dialect and accent. Birmingham is an diverse city in every way. Around 30 percent of the population is not white. Medieval architecture can be seen with some of the churches, and there are buildings from the Gregorian, and Victorian eras. There are museums and art galleries, tourist districts, shopping districts, and a definite Old World feel. Places of interest include Aston Hall, the Back to Back houses, Barber Institute of Fine Arts, Blakesley Hall, and more. J.R.R. Tolkien and Ozzy Osbourne are people associated with Birmingham. Rock bands such as The Moody Blues, Traffic, Judas Priest and Black Sabbath all came from Birmingham. Members of two Birmingham bands combined in the 1970s to form the Electric Light Orchestra. Joan Armatrading was from Birmingham; Robert Palmer lived nearby. Since then, dozens of performers have started or reactivated their stardom, all having roots in Birmingham. Party in the Park is the largest music festival in Birmingham; and the annual International Jazz Festival is Jazz Festival in the United Kingdom
