Cambridge, England has a population of approximately 108,000 people, and is an old university town and the administrative center of Cambridgeshire. It is the heart of the high- technology center. Cambridge is best known for the University of Cambridge, and Cambridge City Airport can accommodate a Boeing 747 or MD-11, but there are no regularly scheduled flights--it is mostly used by business or leisure flights. Since the ground is fairly flat and congested with traffic, many of the students and other residents prefer to pedal instead of drive to their destination. Thus, the city has the highest use of bicycles in the United Kingdom. In 2001, 25 percent of residents traveled to work by bike. Roads have been adapted, including giving bikers separate lanes, and allowing the use of one way streets (to go the other way). In some areas, bikes and pedestrians travel the same paths. The city is now linked to the National Cycle Network. Cambridge Cycling Campaign is an organization campaigning to improve conditions for bikers. Minor bits of trivia include the fact that several novels are set in Cambridge, and Cambridge, Massachusetts (USA) was named after Cambridge, England. In 2004, Cambridge (UK) was granted Fairtrade City status and in 2004, the game Monopoly came out with a Cambridge edition.
