England has more than 83 percent of the total United Kingdom UK population. It occupies most of the island of Great Britain, and borders Scotland and Wales. It is also bordered by the North Sea, the Irish Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, and the English Channel. London is not only England's largest city, it is the capital of the United Kingdom. England has nine famous rivers, including the Thames. England is the most ethnically-diverse country in the United Nations, with a population of approximately 49,000,000. The only European country more dense is the Netherlands. Many famous writers have come from England, including Chaucer, Milton, Shakespeare, Austen, Shelley, Dickens, etc. It has also been the home of rock and roll for at least 40 years, starting with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and the rest of the British Rock invasion that started in the 1960s. England also has national parks, ethnic cuisine, history, art, and music to contribute to the tourists and residents of the country. The English language originated in England, but the language has never been declared the official language, and British English is different than American English. In fact, some terms are so contradictory to each other that people from American and England can say the same words or phrases with entirely different interpretations. The other languages of the United Kingdom are confined to their respective countries. Interestingly, deaf people in England speak British Sign Language (BSL) and, while BSL is an official language of the UK, most governments and hospitals are not particularly handicapped-accessible. In addition, there are a large number of regional accents, so those people with heavier accents might not be easily understood, even in their own country. Many people think England is the same as the United Kingdom, Great Britain, or the British Isles, but there is a distinction between them. The United Kingdom includes England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Great Britain includes England, Scotland, and Wales.
