Exeter, England is in the county of Devon. Exeter has a population of approximately 115,000 people, and the city's motto, Semper fidelis, is also known to be the motto of the United States Marine Corp. Translated from Latin it means, Always Faithful. Attractions in Exeter include a cathedral built in 1050 (because the walls of Exeter were considered more protective for keeping out pirates). A statue of Richard Hooker, who was born in Exeter, is also a predominant historical site. There are ruins of Rougemont Castle, some of which are still in use, that will someday be open to tourists. Also in Edinburgh is the oldest municipal building in England, which is believed to be a center for paranormal activities. There is a wonderful clock at St. Mary Steps, one of several medieval churches in the area. Referred to as The House That Moved, there is also a 14th century building that was strapped together and moved a few inches, back in 1961. The area around the castle, and some of the buildings, are made of local red sandstone, which gives the area its name of Rougemont, which translates to Red Hill. A plaque near the gatehouse makes note that Alice Molland was the last person executed for witchcraft in England in 1685. There is plenty of legend and history worth investigating in Exeter.
