Leeds, England has a population of approximately 445,000 people, and is the center of the borough and city of Leeds in West Yorkshire. Leeds is one of the United Kingdom's strongest economies, unemployment is at record lows, and the city has the largest media, financial and legal areas, next to London. Leeds is also the headquarters of several businesses, including Wal-Mart (Asda); Jet2.com; and Northern Foods, to name of few. Leeds has over 16 skyscrapers either under construction or due to begin soon, that are higher than Leeds' already highest building, West Riding House. Leeds has several sports stadiums, including Elland Road Football Stadium, which holds 40,000 fans. The BBC and Yorkshire Television, in addition to other stations, broadcast from Leeds. Leeds has several museums, including the Royal Armouries Museum, which opened in 1996. Also in Leeds are art museums, theaters, musical halls and art galleries. City Varieties was a hall that hosted performances by Charlie Chaplin and Harry Houdini. The Leeds Festival and the Leeds International Concert Season as annual events, and the International Piano Competition is held every three years. The first motion pictures were taken in Leeds, and the world's first traffic light is on Park Row. There are also buildings still standing from the 12 century. Notable people from Leeds include Malcolm McDowell and Peter O'Toole, although there are dozens of stars of movie, television, and stage. There are also musical groups and musicians.
