Manchester, England is a center of the arts, media, and big business. Famous for sports, two Manchester football clubs and Lancashire County Cricket Club, Manchester hosted the XVII Commonwealth Games in 2002. Manchester is a borough with city status. Manchester is a city and a borough with a population of approximately 438,000 people. Manchester is the third city in the United Kingdom. Manchester's climate is damp, and has a reputation as a rainy city, although the average annual rainfall is only 809mm. During World War II, it was home to Avro [now BAE Systems], which build planes for the Royal Air Force. An attack in 1941 destroyed the center of the city and damaged the Cathedral. There is a large nightclub presence in Manchester, and it is possibly the highest, if not higher, next to London. There are close to 10 art galleries, 10 museums, and two symphonies. The Manchester Camerata is a chamber orchestra. Manchester is a prime area for music education, as it is home to the Royal Northern College of Music and Chetham's School of Music. Like Liverpool, many bands have started in Manchester. Such well known groups include, The Hollies, 10cc, and New Order. Older tourists will remember the names of Freddie and the Dreamers, and Herman's Hermits. Theater fans no doubt remember the song Manchester, England, from the soundtrack of Hair in the late 1960's. While the song and lyrics are wonderful, and had deep meaning to the performance, it had very little impact on the actual town. The lyrics were used to give the connotation that if the person wasn't part of the "local" (New York City, USA) hippie culture, he might have well as been from a foreign country (such as Manchester, England).
