Newcastle, England is a city and metropolitan borough. Found high on England's map, Newcastle is the 20th most populated city in England, and is one of England's core cities. Politicians have considered merging Newcastle with the surrounding metropolitan boroughs, which would make it the United Kingdom's second largest city. Newcastle has a population of approximately 269,000 people. Newcastle's Chinatown entrance is graced with a new arch, which was handed over to the city in 2005. Adding to the interest of the city, the local dialect consists of a vocabulary that does not exist anywhere else in England, and words often have different meanings than commonly understood. The dialects can be traced back to Old Norse and Old English languages. Earning 7th place in Worldwide Best Places for a Night Out, Newcastle has a reputation as a city with lots of bars and lots of fun.
