Sheffield, England is a city and metropolitan borough in northern England. It is named for the River Sheaf that runs through the town. The city has a population of 516,000 people, and it is one of the eight largest English cities outside London that form the English Core Cities Group. Due to the many innovations (such as crucible and stainless steel), Sheffield has become famous within the steel industry. Sheffield is officially Europe's greenest city, and won the 2005 Entente Florale competition. This is also due to the 150 woodland spaces and 50 public parks located in Sheffield. Sheffield also has the most different types of habitat in the United Kingdom. These include urban, parkland, woodland, and others. Large parts of Sheffield have been designated sites of special scientific interest.
