Turku (or Abo) is the oldest and fifth largest city in the country, with a population of approximately 175,000 people. It is located at the mouth of the Aura River, and is the capital city of both Finland Proper and the province of Western Finland. It is also the country's third largest urban area. Turku has one of the largest Finland-Swedish populations in the country. Due to its location, the Port of Turku is one of the busiest seaports in Finland. Turku holds the cultural identity as Finland's historic center, as it was once the largest city in the country. Archaeological findings have dated Turku back to the Stone Age, but the city became the most important location in medieval Finland with the Cathedral of Turku being consecrated and the Turku Castle and Dominic monastery (founded in 1229). There are nine bridges over the Aura River. The first bridge was built in 1414, but is no longer there. The oldest bridge in existence is Auransilta, constructed in 1904. One of the best-known landmarks is the Fori, a small ferry that takes people and bikes across the river.
