Rovaniemi, Finland is the administrative capital and center of commerce in the northern province of Lapland. It has a population of approximately 55,500 people and is the largest city (by area) in the Northern Hemisphere; and one of the largest in the world. Because its nature is unspoiled, and the various recreational activities available, tourism is an important industry. The city has a number of hotels and restaurants located in and around the center of the city. The majority of residents work in the service industry. The most prominent landmarks include the Jatkankynttila Bridge with its eternal flame, the Lappia House, the Arkitkum House, and many others. Rovaniemi is also the home of the world's most northern branch of McDonald's. There can be as many as 200 sightings of the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights, where in southern Finland, the sightings can be as few as 20.
