Le Havre is a city in Normandy, France, with a population of approximately 188,000 people, located on the English Channel at the mouth of the Seine. La Havre was a port-of-call for ocean liners making Transatlantic crossings. La Havre is the second largest city in Normandy, after Rouen. It is also the second largest export port in France. In 2005, La Havre was classified as a World Heritage Site. La Havre has a university and a sports presence, and has the oldest professional association football club in France. Devastated during the Battle of Normandy, approximately 5,000 people were killed and 12,000 homes were totally destroyed. The city has since been rebuilt, but may historic building where lost. There are a number of churches and cathedrals in the area, one of which was built in 1536. The Church of St. Joseph is one of the most recognized symbols of the city; the bell tower is one of the tallest in France. There are also scores of museums, 18th century architecture, a music hall, a cultural center, a Japanese garden, and other sites of interest.
