Lyon is a city in east central France. The third largest French city, it is a major center of business, situated between Paris and Marseille, and has a reputation as the French Capital of Gastronomy. Together with its suburbs and satellite towns, Lyon forms the second largest metropolitan area in France with a population of approximately 1,650,000 people. Lyon is the capital of the Rhone-Alpes region, and the prefecture of the Rhone departement. The city gave its name to the Lyonnais Province, of which it was the capital. Today the region around Lyon is still known as Lyonnais. Lyon happens to be the international headquarters of Interpol. The Saint-Jean and Croix-Rousses areas, noted for their narrow passageways that pass through buildings and link the streets, were designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1998. There are several colleges, universities, structures, monuments, buildings, and bike paths. Many famous people have come from or lived in Lyon, and the rock group Renaissance recorded a song entitled, The Flood at Lyons on their album.
