Athens is the capital city in Greece and one of the most famous cities in the world, named after the goddess Athena. Modern Athens is a huge cosmopolitan metropolis, with a population of approximately 3,700,000 people. Athens' metropolitan area is growing quickly and is the dominant center of all aspects of life in Greece. The city is also a leading business center in Europe. Ancient Athens was a powerful city/state and a well-known center of learning, home of Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum. It is considered to be the Cradle of Western Civilization, due to the impact of achievements during the 4th and 5th centuries B.C. The heritage is still evident, shown through the monuments and artwork including most famous sites as the Parthenon. Many of the cultural landmarks were renovated for the 2004 Olympic Games. Even in ancient times, Athens was a popular tourist destination.
