Mykonos (or Myconos), Greece is an island and part of the Cyclades. The Cyclades are a group of islands in the Aegean Sea, between Tinos, Siros, Paros, and Naxos. It consists mostly of granite and has little water, and has a population of approximately 6,500. Archaeology indicates settlements in the early part of the 11th century BC; more recent discoveries have uncovered remnants dating back to 3000 BC. Mykonos is the location of the mythical battle between Zeus and Gigantes; the island is named for Apollo's grandson, Mykons. The beaches are beautiful, with blue oceans, and are perfect for windsurfing. In addition to taverns, and loud music, one will also find total nudity at some of the beaches. Many consider the nightlife to the best in Greece. The city attracts world-famous disc jockeys to the beach bars, and Mykonos is a well-known GLBT friendly area.
