India is a country that is the greater part of South Asia. The coastline is over 7,000km (4,349 miles) long, and borders Pakistan, People's Republic of China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. India is the seventh largest country (by area), and has one of the most varied populations of flora and fauna, as well as terrain and climate, than anywhere else in the world. With a population of approximately 1,200,000,000 (billion). India is home to four ancient civilizations, and has played a significant role in history. Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, and Sikhism all have their origins in India. India is the second most populated country in the world, and the world's largest liberal democracy. There are 22 official languages spoken across the country, but the national languages are Hindi and English. India is rich with culture, including practices, languages, customs, and monuments. The Taj Mahal is a favorite among tourists. India is also rich with festivals, and offers a diversity among the different castes and creeds. Most widely celebrated festivals include DiWali, Holi, and Dussehra, and the Muslim celebration of Eid. Other festivals are held in different parts of the country, but they are called different names depending on where they are held.
