Genoa is a city and a seaport in northern Italy, the capital of the Province of Genoa, and of the region of Liguria. The city has an approximate population of 602,000 people. The Port of Genoa was the first port in Italy, ranking second in the Mediterranean. The Aquarium of Genoe was the largest in Europe at the time it was built, and the Palazzo Ducale is one of the several landmarks of the region of Tuscany. From 1865 to1870, the city was also the capital of the Kingdom of Italy. There are many landmarks in Genoa that are worth seeking out, including the previously mentioned Palazzo Ducale, St. Lawrence Cathedral, and the Museo d'Arte Orientale (the largest collections of Oriental art in Europe). The port of Genoa is home to an ancient lighthouse, the University of Genoa is home to 40,000 students, and Genoa was designated European Capital of Culture in 2004.
