The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is a small, landlocked country in continental Europe, bordered by France, Germany, and Belgium. It is the only Grand Duchy in the world and has a population of approximately 470,000 people. (A Grand Duchy is a territory whose head of state is a Grand Duke or Grand Duchess.) The explanation of this, alone, is a wonderful (but complicated), tale. The Republics of Finland and Lithuania have been Grand Duchies through history, as well. In 2007, Luxembourg will be represented at the European Capital of Culture event.
