Eindhoven has grown from a little village to one of the largest cities in the Netherlands, with a population of approximately 210,000 people. Eindhoven is a municipality and a city located in the Province of Noord-Brabant in south Netherlands. Air raids during World War II destroyed the city; there were little remains to be reconstructed. In addition, there were renovations made using high rise skyscrapers, with little regard for the heritage of the city. Later, in the 1960s, the Medieval Town Hall was destroyed, and a new one was built. In fact, the ancient hall was destroyed to make way for a highway that was never built. During the rest of the century, large housing developments were built, making Eindhoven the fifth largest city in Netherlands. The housing was built on former agricultural and forest land that had been turned into farms in the 19th century. With a large student population from the Eindhoven University and other undergraduate schools, there are bars, restaurants, museums, art galleries, and annual festivals.
