Rotterdam, located in the Province of South Holland, is the second largest municipality in Netherlands, with a population of approximately 588,500 people. Rotterdam is the city of Netherlands with the highest percentage of non-western foreigners. Nearly half of the population was not born, or have at least one parent who was not born, in Netherlands. The city has the largest port in Europe and was, until recently, the largest port on Earth. Since 2004, Asian ports have taken over the world leading position. Thus, in 2004, Rotterdam was the seventh largest port in the world in terms of containers handled. The most important industries to the port are petrochemical and general transshipment handlings. The harbor is an important transit point for transport of bulk and other goods between Europe and other parts of the world. Among the attractions in Rotterdam are the many museums, including a tax museum. Rotterdam was one of the European Culture Capitals of 2001, based on its orchestra, concert hall, theaters, zoo, and other wonderful sites and venues. The city is also home to the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Arts.
