Bergen is a municipality and city in the county of Hordaland, Norway with a population of approximately 4,600,000. Bergen is known as the gateway to the fjords. The oldest part of the city is on the north side of the Bay of Vagen. Bergen has a number of old, wooden houses dating from the early 18th century, but also has a Medieval feel. St. Mary Church is the oldest church of Bergen, dating back to 1130. Two other churches are Medieval in origin, but have since been modified. The fortress of Bergenhus has a number of buildings, including Haakon's Hall from the 1260s, and Rosenkrantz Tower, built around a Medieval fortification in the 1560s. A popular attraction is the open air fish market on the harbor, where there is also a shopping area, rebuilt in Art Nouveau, around the main square. Not to be overlooked is the tram ride up Mt. Floyen where the view of the mountains is awe-inspiring. Other attractions include the seals, penguins and fish from the area; the different types of architecture and quaint wooden houses; the Bergen International Festival, the Philharmonic Orchestra, and the music hall. Bergen was a European Capital of Culture in 2000. Other cultural events include Nattjazz and Bergfest. There are other bands of every type, music competitions, art galleries, and sporting events.
