Kristiansand is a city and municipality, and the capital of the country of Vest-Agder, Norway. It is the fifth largest city in Norway, with an approximate population of 77,000 people. It is also the largest city in the geographical region of Sorlandet. The Kristiansand Zoo and Amusement Park is located east of the city; it hosts a number of animals in their natural habitat. Every July, Kristiansand is the site of the Quart Festival, a rock music festival that lasts for days; it's the largest of its kind in Norway. Kristiansand has major shipbuilding and repair facilities that support Norway's North Sea oil industry. Kristiansand has a great deal of summer sunshine compared to other parts of Norway. Notable people from Norway include author and Nobel Prize (Literature) Winner Bjornstjerne Bjornson, and the pioneer of sugar cane production in Hawaii, Valdemar Knudsen.
