Kristiansund is a city and municipality on the northwest coast of Norway, in the Nordmore district of country More og Romsdal with an approximate population of 17,100 people. Kristiansund is build on four islands--Nordlandet, Gomalandet, Kirkelandet, and Innlandet. Kristiansund is one of the most densely populated cities of Norway, having what is arguably the country's most urban small city center, due to the relatively small size of the islands on which it is built, and the very constricted central harbor/town area of Kirkelandet. Kristiansund is known as the major bacalao city of Norway. Bacalao is made of salted, dried codfish and is exported to Spain, Portugal, and Latin America as food to be used for Lent. Kristiansund has become a major oil and gas city at the northwest coast. Shell, Statoil, and Norsk offshore have offices in Kristiansund. Because of the city's heavy involvement in fish processing and international shipping, there are several international consulates in the city.
