Katowice is an important city in the historical region of Upper Silesia in southern Poland. Katowice is the capital of the administration and the local government region called Silesian Viovodship since 1999, and was previously the capital of Katowice Voivodship. Katowice is the main city of the Upper Silesian Industrial Area with a population of approximately 321,163 people. Severe ecological damage to the natural environment occurred during the post-World War II time of communist government in the People's Republic of Poland, but recent changes in regulations, procedures, and policies of post-communist Polish government have reversed much of the harm that was done. Katowice has several theaters, museums, music halls, and cinemas. It also hosts many TV and radio stations, and annual festivals and performances. With close to 10 art galleries and close to 20 parks, tourists can find ways to keep themselves occupied and engrossed in the delights of this city for several days or weeks. Many of the Art Nouveu buildings are still standing, others have been destroyed. Be sure to research Gdansk to ensure you are able to appreciate the full glory of this tourist destination.
