Lagos is a town on the Algarve coast of Portugal with a population of approximately 15,000 people. Lagos is an ancient maritime town with 2,000 years of history. Lago's economy, like most other coastal towns, has always been closely linked to the sea, and fishing has been an important activity since ancient times. Since 1960, the city has embraced tourism, which has become its main economic activity. Lago has beautiful beaches, good climate, the sea, a coastline, and history. There are also cultural and other entertainment venues. Many local traditions are celebrated, ranging from architecture to cuisine and crafts. There are local specialties in cuisine (almonds, figs, and eggs), wine, and liquor. Natural sites of interest include Ponta de Piedade (Mercy Point), Grutas da Costa d'Orio (Golden Coast grottos), Laguna de Alvor (Alvor Lagoon), Mata Nacional de Barao de S. Joao (National Mata of St. John's Baron). Across the river from Lagos is Meia Praia (Half beach); on the coast are seven other beaches, mostly linked by tunnels in the rocks.
