Terceira Island, in the Azores Archipelago, is in the middle of the north Atlantic Ocean and has a population of approximately 55,000 people. The Azores are an autonomous region under Portuguese sovereignty. Angra do Heroismo, the historical capital of the Azores, is located on Terceira, and its historical center is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island has two ports; it also has a military base in Lajes. Angra do Heroismo is the oldest city in the Azores dating back to 1534. The island is beautiful from the beach to the top of the mountains; the western part is covered with vegetation, and a volcano is the north part. The main economy is exportation of livestock and dairy products. A daily event from May 1 to September 30 each year is the Tourada a corda (Bullfight with rope). Some days have two or three challenges.
