Slovakia is a landlocked republic in Central Europe. It borders the Czech Republic, Austria, Poland, Ukraine, and Hungary. Slovakia is a member of the European Union and has a population of more than 5,000,000 people. The capital of Slovakia is Bratislava, and the landscape is primarily mountainous. Lowlands are found in the south, and major rivers runs though the country. Once part of Czechoslovakia, Slovakia became a separate state once controlled by Nazi Germany. After World War II, Czechoslovakia was reassembled and came under the influence of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact. In 1969, the state became a federation of the Czech Socialist Republic and Slovak Socialist Republic. The end of communist rule in Czechoslovakia in 1989, during the peaceful revolution, was followed by yet another dissolution. Slovakia and the Czech Republic separated in 1993, Slovakia became a member of the European Union in 2004. The Slovak constitution guarantees freedom of religion, and the majority of citizens practice Roman Catholicism. About 2,300 Jews remained after World War II; prior to the war, the Jewish population was approximately 120,000. Slovakia is a member of the European Union and NATO; as a member of the United Nations, it was elected to a 2-year term on the UN Security Council for the first time in 2005. Slovakia is also a member of several other international organizations
