Slovenia is a coastal Alpine country in south central Europe, bordering Italy, the Adriatic Sea, Croatia, Hungary, and Austria. Slovenia has undergone several name changes in the past, most recently it was the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia until it gained independence in 1991. In 2004, it became a member of the European Union. Slovenia is also a member of the Council of Europe, and NATO. The official language is Slovenian, which is a member of the South Slavik language group. Hungarian and Italian are the official languages in the ethnically mixed regions along the Hungarian and Italian border. Slovenia is small, but has much to offer, including flora and fauna. Over half the country is forested. Forests are an important natural resource, but their true value lies in the preservation of natural diversity; their protection of the soil; tourism and recreation; and the beauty of the landscape. The linden tree is a national symbol. The national proverb states, A true Slovenian must raise a child, write a book, and plant a tree. There are many flowers that can only be found in the Alps, as well as animals and wildlife that can only been found in the Slovenian forests. Hunting has a long tradition; in 2005, Slovenia had an endangered population of wolves and brown bears. There are also specific birds and fish found in Slovenia. Domestic pets originating in Slovenia include the Carniolan honeybee, the Karst Sheepdog, and the Lipizzan horse breed.
