Spain is the largest of the three sovereign nations that make up the Iberian Peninsula; the others are Portugal and Andorra. The Canary Islands, Ceuta, and Melilla, enjoy a special status as historic communities. According to the Spanish government, there are 3,700,000 legal foreign residents in Spain. Of these, 500,000 are Moroccan and another half a million are Ecuadorian. More than 300,000 are Romanian and 270,000 are Colombian. There are also numbers of British and German citizens. In 2005, the immigrant population of Spain increased by 700,000 people. Spain has the highest immigration rate of the European Union. Spain's climate varies, depending on one's location. Since 1994, Spain has recognized unregistered cohabitation, allowing same-sex partners to enjoy tenancy rights at the Federal level. Since 1998, 12 of the 17 autonomous communities recognize Civil Unions and registered cohabitation. This provides the rights of kinship, inheritance, and property right. A same-sex marriage bill has been passed, as well. There are far too many tourist attractions and noteworthy sites to list, although there are websites that address individual locations and areas of the country.
