Kalmar is a city in Småland, situated by the Baltic Sea, in southeast Sweden. Kalmar has a population of approximately 34,000 people, and is the seat of Kalmar Municipality. Kalmar has been an industrial city with Mekaniska Verkstad making steam engines and large machinery. Kalmar is home to over 9,000 students from the University of Kalmar, and a research facility for Telia Sonera. Kalmar is home of the Key ot the Kingdom, Sweden's best-preserved Renaissance castle. Kalmar is one of Sweden's largest tourist counties, offering beaches, vacation houses, castle ruins, a restored Viking village, museums, and more, including the Orrefors glassworks.
