Kiruna is a city in northern Sweden with a population of 19,000 people. Kiruna became a Swedish city in 1948, and is the second largest municipality in the world by area. There are more than 6,000 lakes in the Kiruna municipality, Torneträsk Lake is the largest. Seven rivers run through the city; the untouched geography has been preserved with the establishment of Abisko National Park near the Norwegian border. Kiruna is 145km (about 90 miles) north of the Arctic Circle, and has perpetual daylight, midnight sun, from approximately May 30 to July 15. The polar night is a few weeks shorter, lasting from approximately December 13 to January 5. Iron ore extraction is a key industry of the area, and the town is dependent on the mining company. Tourists are able to ski, fish, and canoe, all in the same day. The best canoeing waters in Sweden, and seven large rivers invite white water rafting.
