Östersund is a municipality in the middle of Sweden with a population of 58,400 people, and the provincial capital of the County of Jamtland; it is also home to the province’s County Governor. A number of historic sights are located in or around the city, including several museums and Sweden’s oldest preserved church. There is also a nature reserve on the island of Andersön where the ruins of the 12th Century Sunne church are located. Östersund is the only city in the province and it is located on the shore of the fifth largest lake in Sweden. There is a cross-country ski stadium located 2km from the city center; it is considered one of the finest ski stadiums in Sweden. The stadium is also internationally renowned due to the topography of its ski tracks. Several biathlon world cup races have been held at the stadium, as well as several national championships in cross-country skiing. Östersund hosted the 1970 Biathlon World Championship and has once again been designated as the host city for the Championship
