Basel is the third most populated city in northwest Switzerland, on Rhine River; it borders Germany and France. Basel's population of approximately 167,000 people. Switzerland's tallest building, the Basler Messeturm, is one of the most popular attractions. The Romanesque Munster is another architectural monument--it even survived a Medieval earthquake; the Tomb of Erasmus lies beneath it. Basel is home to various scientific societies, including the Entomological Society of Basel, which celebrated 100 years in 2005. Basel is considered to be on the most cultural cities in Europe. In 1997, Basel was a nominee for the title of European Capital of Culture in 2004, and started the EJCF Choir Festival opened in 1992, hosted by the Basel Boys Choir. In addition, there are 9 museums and other architectural, art, science, and cultural venues to enjoy.
