Switzerland is an Alpine country in Central Europe that borders Germany, France, Italy, Austria, and Liechtenstein. Switzerland has been a Federation since 1848, and has a long tradition of neutrality. Switzerland became a full member of the United Nations in 2002. Switzerland is a relatively small country (by area), with a population of approximately 7,400,000 people. The country is divided into three areas: Swiss Alps, Swiss Plateau, and the Jura mountains. The Alps are the mountain range across the central and southern part of Switzerland. Among the Alps are vallies and glaciers. The weather can vary greatly between different localities in Switzerland. Switzerland has three official languages: German, French, and Italian. The neutrality of Switzerland and low taxes are an attractive tourist considerations. During war time, Switzerland's history of political asylum has helped to attract tourists, as well.
