The Kingdom of Thailand is a country in Southeast Asia with a population of approximately 65,000,000 people. Thailand borders Laos, Cambodia, the Gulf of Thailand, Malaysia, the Andaman Sea, and Myanmar. Thailand was once known as Siam, which was the country's official name until 1949. The official Thai calendar is based on the Buddhist Era, which is 543 years ahead of the western calendar. In 2004, the southwest coast of Thailand was hit with a tsunami, following the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. In places, it was as high as 10 meters. The tsunami killed more than 5,000 in Thailand, at least half of them were tourists. Industries in Thailand include appliances, components, computer parts, and automobiles. Tourism represents less than 10 percent of the economic factor. Approximately 95 percent of Thais are Buddhists; the second largest (4 percent) religious group is Muslims. Thai is the national language, with its own alphabet; many ethnic and regional dialects are in the area where people speak mostly Isan or Khmer. Even though English is taught in school, there are few that are proficient.
