Istanbul is Turkey's largest city, and is the capital of Istanbul Province. It is Turkey's cultural and economic center and is the only metropolis in the world which is on two continents. The population of Istanbul is approximately 10,000,000 people, making it one of the largest cities in Europe. Istanbul has been chosen as the European Capital of Culture for 2010. Istanbul hosts pop and classical concerts, ballet, and theater. Historical sites include Hagia Irene, Rumeli Fortress, Yedikule, the courtyard of Topkapı Palace, and Gülhane park. The Ataturk Cultural Center, Cemal Reşit Rey concert hall and other open air and modern theater halls are hosting the shows, as well as other popular music venues. There are also clubs, musical theaters, discos, bars and pavilions. The cross-continent European walking route E8 trail begins/ends in Istanbul and spans 4700km to Cork, Ireland.
