Washington, D.C. has a population of approximately 558,000 people. Washington D.C. is not a state in the United States. It is, in fact, a federal district the includes the city of Washington. The District of Columbia and the city of Washington are part of the same governing party. In addition, Washington, D.C. is the capital of the United States. Because of its historical significance, Washington D.C. has several major attractions, including the White House, the National Holocaust Museum, the headquarters of the F.B.I. It was named for the first president, George Washington. There are monuments honoring Franklin Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Navy Memorial Heritage Center. Ford's Theater and the Lincoln Museum, the National Gallery of Art, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art are also in Washington, D.C. The National memorials, the George Washington Masonic Memorial, the U.S. Marine Memorial, the Kennedy Memorials and the Challenger Memorials are found at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C. There are dozens of additional momuments, memorials, and attractions in Washington, D.C. Washington is also the home of embassies throughout the world.
